Building Woodlands Meed update

West Sussex County Council has published an update confirming arrangements for moving Woodlands Meed students across to their fantastic new college building.

The transfer will take place during the Christmas break to ensure minimum disruption to staff and students. You can read more in West Sussex County Council's statement here.

On site, our team is continuing to work flat out to put the finishing touches on the multi-million pound new college building, ready for West Sussex County Council to take possession and start preparations for the handover to the College.

We share everyone's disappointment in the delayed opening of the college, especially as we have forged such strong connections with students, staff and parents throughout the duration of the project, and we fully understand the importance and significance of this scheme for the community. However, we know that this modern, bright, spacious new building will provide a first-class learning and support environment for young people with SEND for generations to come.

Facilities at the new College building include:

  • An outside courtyard and amphitheatre where children can sit together and hold sporting and social events
  • A new hydrotherapy pool
  • Much more internal space in 12 new classrooms and specialist learning areas for music, sciences and food technology
  • High quality sporting facilities including all weather pitches, and a 2-court sports hall and accessible changing facilities
  • A large dining hall and kitchen, common room and a range of therapy spaces
  • New outside learning and play areas including classrooms, an outside gym and gardening areas
  • Solar panels on the roof making the facilities energy efficient, reducing energy costs and the college's carbon footprint.

Since the crane coming down at the beginning of the summer, the build has progressed both in terms of the new College building and the grounds.

The ISG site welfare (temporary buildings used by the site team) has been downsized enabling the completion of the Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), installation of gym equipment, the Play Trail and landscaping works to the South of site, along with the courtyard hard and soft landscaping.

Over the next few weeks, the team on site will be cleaning and finessing the external facades of the building. The internal fit out is progressing, with the flooring, wall finishes and doors being completed throughout the build, to enable the installation of fixed furniture. Alongside this, the mechanical and electrical works continue, enabling the sanitaryware to be installed.

The new hydrotherapy pool is ready to be filled with water, which will take place shortly.
